The Second Week of Advent: December 7, 2025
Second Sunday of Advent
The Bethlehem Candle
The candle name for the second week of Advent is called the Bethlehem candle.
This recalls Mary and Joseph’s journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem. The Gospel of Luke says, "Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be enrolled with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child,” (Luke 2:4-5).
We are all on a journey toward a destination. What this helps us with is that our ultimate end is union with God who is Emmanuel. He is with us. He is our peace, which is the theme for this week. I do not know about you, but there seems to be less peace in our world, but most especially in our homes. If peace does not reign in our homes with the family, the rest of society will never know true peace. Jesus Christ is the Prince of Peace. St. Paul expresses this beautifully in his letter to the Ephesians, “For he is our peace,” (Eph 2:14). The angels proclaim this Good News by singing, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men with whom he is pleased!” (Luke 2:14).
Jesus wants to give you His peace in your own spiritual journey. What has your journey toward Christmas been like so far? Has it been peaceful or stressful? May this week be a renewal of peace in your heart. Ask Mary and Joseph to help you to receive the peace that only Christ can give.
Prayer for Week 2 of Advent:
“Dear Jesus, you entered our world on Christmas as the Prince of Peace. This Advent, as we strive to become saints, fill us with a deep and abiding peace. Help us share that peace with everyone we encounter, especially those who need it most. Amen.”
