The First Week of Advent: November 30, 2025

First Sunday of Advent

The Prophecy Candle

"The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shined," (Isaiah 9:2)

The candle name for the first week of Advent is called the prophecy candle.

By Fr. John Ferguson

“The Incarnation changes everything. Jesus bridges the gap for us. We need this hope now more than ever.”

The candle name for the first week of Advent is called the prophecy candle. This focuses on the Old Testament prophets foretelling the coming of the Divine Messiah. It will be a day of great hope and anticipation. The prophet that echoes this theme of hope clearly is Isaiah who says, "The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shined," (Isaiah 9:2). It is this hope that will remove the iniquities of our sins that keep us from our God. Since the Fall, there has always been this chasm between God and humanity. The Incarnation changes everything. Jesus bridges the gap for us. We need this hope now more than ever.

As we conclude this Jubilee Year of Hope, may we always hope in God and praise him in this season of Advent in a new and powerful way! Are you ready to discover the hope Jesus is inviting you to experience this Advent?

Prayer for the First Week of Advent:

“Dear Jesus, you are the hope in our messy world. This Advent, help us slow down, listen to your voice, and focus on what is important. We place our hope in you as we prepare our hearts to celebrate your birth on Christmas. Amen.”
